William Albert Lanier

William Albert Lanier was born in 1927 in a small town in Georgia, USA. At the age of 16, he attended Georgia Institute of Technology to study architecture but halted his studies to join the Navy during World War II. After the war, Lanier continued to pursue his studies of architecture at BMC in the late 1940s, where he also helped to plan and build campus buildings such as the Minimum House. At the college, he met artist Ruth Asawa and the two married in 1949. They worked to establish the San Francisco School of the Arts, a public high school for the performing arts. Lanier had a passion for spacious interiors and natural light displayed through much of his architectural work. The artist has had work shown at places such as the Asheville Art Museum, NC. Lanier died in October of 2008.
