M.C. Richards

M.C. Richards (Mary Caroline) was born in Weiser, ID in 1916 and grew up in Portland, OR. She graduated from Reed College with a bachelors in Literature and Languages, and the University of California at Berkeley where she studied Chinese and earned her masters in English and Ph.D in English and Literature. Richards joined the BMC faculty in 1945 along with her second husband, Albert William Levi Jr. She taught writing and founded The Black Mountain Review. Richards revisited the college for a pottery 10-day session in 1952 where she explored her passion for clay work. Many books of her writings were published, including “The Crossing Point” (1973), "Imagine Inventing Yellow" (1991), and "Opening Our Moral Eye " (1996). She was also featured in a documentary entitled "M.C. Richards: The Fire Within" (2003). The artist died in 1999.
