John Cage & David Tudor

David Tudor and John Cage worked closely to compose many works. Tudor became the pianist for the Merce Cunningham Dance Company. During the 1950’s and 1960’s, Tudor toured with John Cage. Tudor premiered John Cage’s Music of Changes, Concert for Piano and Orchestra, and 4’33”. One of his early works was a collaboration with John Cage, Lowell Cross, Marcel Duchamp, and Gordon Mumma, titled Reunion (1968). Tudor had ties with the Foundation of Contemporary Art (FCPA) founders, Cage, Cunningham, Robert Rauschenberg, and Christian Wolff. He received a grant from FCPA in 1970 and again in 1988. Following Cage’s death the John Cage Foundation in 1992 made Tudor the first recipient of the biennial John Cage Award. The two forged a lifelong relationship through the bonds made at BMC.
