The Quiet House
Mary Gregory and Alexander “Bill” Reed created the environment of the “Quiet House” together in 1942. The structure was designed by Alex Reed in memory of Mark Dreier, the nine year old son of Theodore “Ted” and Barbara “Bobbie” Dreier. On October 8, 1941, young Mark was killed in a car accident near Lake Eden dam. Between funds from Reed and and others given to the family, the “Quiet House” was constructed. Much of the labor from moving stones and cutting wood to heavy construction was Reed’s work. The woodworking instructor, Gregory, aided in the construction and designed and crafted the benches for the building. Reed even wove the curtains for the windows. The building was a site for meditation, wedding ceremonies, and memorials.
