John Cage

John Cage is recognized for his use and the manipulation of sounds, especially natural sounds, in musical compositions. The artist was born in Los Angeles, CA in 1912. Cage studied at BMC from 1948-1953 and during his time there he collaborated with others such as Merce Cunningham and Robert Rauschenberg. He sought to experiment and explore the compositional ideas of music and accidental occurrences in his work. He has had work shown in places such as New York’s Museum of Modern Art and the Smithsonian American Art Museum. The composer focused on the incorporation of unexpected features, which allowed chance happenings to communicate through his work. The American avant-garde composer died in August on 1992.
