Hazel Larsen Archer & Merce Cunningham
During BMC’s 1948 summer session, the photographer, Hazel Larsen Archer created a number of iconic photographic documentations of the college, including interactions with Willem and Elaine de Kooning as well as of the dancer, Merce Cunningham. In these photographs, the artist was able to depict Cunningham in the act of fluid movement, the essential act of the dancer’s art form. Archer’s photographs reflects on the essence of motion without the blur or the tell of movement, the ability to see the passing of time through motion, second by second. This work, originally taken on 35mm film, shows the relationships across mediums to allow for the creation of new and innovative collaboratory works.
