Anni Albers

Anni Albers, born in 1899, was a German textile artist who attended BMC with her husband Josef Albers in 1933-1949. Forced to immigrate from Berlin because of WWII, the two were invited by the founder John Andrew Rice to teach and attend courses at this new experimental art school. Josef first becoming a professor and Anni eventually established a position herself as a weaving instructor at the college. Considered one of the most influential textile artist of the era, her work merged utilitarian characteristics with experimental designs. After leaving BMC, in 1949 Anni Albers had her first solo show at the Museum of Modern Art, NY, and was also the first textile artist to have a solo exhibition at this location. The artist died in 1994.
